Clinical hours tell one part of a student’s story. Schools also need to understand what the student has practiced, how performance is developing, and what still needs attention.
Agree on what progress means
Begin with the school’s required competencies and evaluation approach. Clarify which activities are observed, practiced with support, or evaluated under the agreed supervision model.
Connect attendance with learning
Review attendance alongside instructor feedback and competency documentation. This gives faculty a more useful basis for a conversation than hours alone.
Keep feedback specific
Useful feedback identifies the task, the student’s current level of support, and the next learning goal. It should help the student and academic team understand what improvement looks like.
Communicate early
Agree on how the clinical team will flag concerns, record follow-up, and involve the school when a student needs additional support. An established communication process helps everyone act on the same information.
Maintain academic oversight
The school retains responsibility for its academic requirements and evaluation decisions. The clinical partner supplies agreed observations and documentation to support that oversight.
